A Postal Index Number (PIN Code) is a 6-digit code used by India Post to identify delivery locations and streamline sorting operations across the country.
Postal Zones (First Digit)
The first digit of a PIN Code indicates the geographic region in India. There are 9 postal zones, where 1-8 represent state regions and 9 is reserved exclusively for the Indian Army/APO.
Sub-Zones & Districts
The second digit denotes the sub-zone (or postal circle), and the third digit represents the specific sorting district. This structure allows sorting hubs to instantly route letters to the right administrative region.
Delivery Post Offices
The last three digits (e.g., 001, 102) point directly to the individual delivery post office responsible for dispatching mail to your doorstep or local area.
