2. When was the PIN Code system introduced in India and by whom?
The PIN Code system was introduced in India on August 15, 1972. It was designed and implemented by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Communications, to simplify mail sorting and distribution processes.
3. What does each digit of a 6-digit PIN Code represent?
Each of the six digits holds a specific geographical and administrative meaning:
- First Digit: Indicates one of the 9 postal regions (zones) in India.
- Second Digit: Indicates the sub-region or state within the zone.
- Third Digit: Indicates the sorting district within the region.
- Last Three Digits (4-6): Identify the specific delivery post office.
4. How many postal zones are there in India?
There are total of 9 postal zones in India. Out of these, 8 represent geographical regions covering different states and union territories, while the 9th zone is exclusively reserved for the Army Postal Service (APS) to handle defense force communication.
5. What is the difference between HO, SO, and BO?
These terms refer to the administrative hierarchy of post offices:
- HO (Head Office): The primary post office in a district or region handling administrative, accounting, and general financial functions.
- SO (Sub-Office): Standard offices in urban areas and major towns, offering regular postal services, banking, and full delivery operations.
- BO (Branch Office): Local offices in small rural villages that handle basic mail distribution, letter collection, and limited booking services.
6. Can two different villages have the same PIN Code?
Yes. Multiple villages and post office branches (BOs) can share the exact same PIN Code if they fall under the delivery jurisdiction of the same central Delivery Sub-Office (SO) or Head Office (HO).
